The New Boys’ Volleyball Team

On Monday March 10th 2025, the Boys Volleyball team at Leonia High School assembled and started practices to have a strong start to the beginning of the inaugural season. There’s been talk for a couple of years about possibly forming a team, but it wasn’t until Junior Yehsung Jun and Senior Timmy Chen came together to create this team. It started out as a club that only met one day a week. And now thanks to these two, it has been renamed as a team and is in operation. A lot of the people on the team have been playing volleyball together for a while, but now that it is a team, it allows everyone to grow and build bonds with people they may have not been close with before.

Yehsung Jun says, “So far I am very proud of the team and how many people have come to be part of the team. I love how close we have all become and how much we have grown in our relationships with one another.” Nothing makes a team stronger than coming together, building bonds, and supporting one another in practices and on the court during games. The team definitely has been bonding really well and with the help of winning games, even losing, it will bring everyone together like family.

As the season progresses, there is hope that the team will improve in places like confidence, strength, and obtaining a better mentality when playing in games. The varsity coach, Kelly Daley says, “My hope for this season is to see the players grow more in confidence and comfortability on the court during matches. It’s also important that they keep supporting each other and communicating throughout each game.” Every player has something they can improve upon and with every game, these players can learn from their mistakes and fix them for the next time they play in a game.

One thing that is common between all the players as far as what they all should improve upon, is not playing scared because that will cause them to make more mistakes and lose easy points. Senior Captain Timmy Chen says, “What is going to push everyone this season is working as a team so that the team gets better with their skills and capability.”

The team has beaten Lodi High School with a score of 25-21 in the first set and 25-18 in the second set. On Wednesday April 23, 2025, the JV team beat Woodbridge with a score of 30-18.

The team hopes that there will be support from people who wish to show up. The team looks forward to improving upon their skills and continuing to build bonds with each other. Along with that, the team looks forward to winning many games and rely on the support of each other as well as the people that come to support them at the games.
