Early Season Meets Show Promising Season for the Leonia Cross Country Team

The Leonia Cross Country varsity team is off to a hot start this 2021 Fall season. The boys have been able to place first three times and second one time in the first four meets of the season. The girls have placed first once, second twice, and fifth once. The impressive performance comes from practicing hard all year round. They were able to create many strong runners to take on other schools at meets.

The Leonia Cross Country team has always been outstanding, winning multiple league and county races through the years. They have also won a state race. This year’s boys and girls varsity squad look very promising once again.

Leonia High School Senior, Alex Coello, a dominant boys varsity runner, expresses how he feels about the team this season: “I really believe in all of the guys. We have been working so hard and I think if we all run how we are capable, we will be incredibly successful.” The team has been practicing around 6 times a week all offseason to prepare for this Fall.

Jack Schuller, another senior Cross Country runner who has also been dominant to begin the season, has high hopes for this Fall: “We want to win the NJIC conference championship, finish in top three at Bergen County Meet of Champions, win state sectionals, and then win the state championship. We have a very talented group of guys that are capable of getting it done, and I have a lot of faith in them.” The runners truly believe in themselves and their team. They are doing great and do not seem like they are slowing down anytime soon and their hard work will most likely pay off.

Though there are many fast runners that are graduating this year, there are also runners in lower grades that are able to compete at high levels. The Freshman team is filled with many talented runners, finishing first as a team in every race so far. This year and the continuing years of cross country look bright.
