Ciao! LHS Heads to Italy for Spring Break
On April 10th, LHS students will head to Italy for Spring break with history teacher Ms. Kelty and other chaperones where they will explore the wonders of the ancient Rome and enjoy learning about a new culture.
Having studied in Italy during college, Ms. Kelty is thrilled to share the country she once called “home” with her students. Adding to the excitement is the unique experience of seeing the country during the Jubilee year, a significant event in the Catholic tradition.
Upon arrival, the first thing Mrs.Kelty wants to do is declare, “I’m home!” and begin exploring the cities. Florence holds a special place in her heart, as she spent the most time there, but she is equally excited to visit Milan for the first time. The opportunity to see familiar sights and see new ones makes this journey even more meaningful.
Italian cuisine is another highlight of the trip. Ms. Kelty eagerly awaits indulging in regional specialties, especially the carb-filled delights that Italy is famous for. Food is a gateway to culture and she looks forward to watching us students experiencing each region’s unique flavors.
More than anything, she is excited to see the students’ reactions to the surprises planned throughout the trip. Preparation has been very careful as she has read books about the destinations, created handbooks for chaperones, and carefully planned each day’s itinerary to make sure the students get the most out of their experience.
Though she isn’t nervous about cultural differences, she does have concerns about how students will adapt, particularly when it comes to ordering coffee, it’s a process that’s different from what they’re used to in the U.S. But travel is full of unexpected moments, and Mrs.Kelty has seen and learned to love surprises, whether they come from students’ newfound interests or their ability to pack so lightly,
One tradition she always sticks to? Travel snacks. Twizzlers are a must have, and they have become a shared treat among certain chaperones. With her snacks packed and plans in place, Mrs. kelty is ready for an unforgettable Italian adventure, one filled with nostalgia, learning, and new discoveries.
