Finishing Winter Strong: Staying Positive and Preparing for Spring
Being in a good mental state during the wintertime is a hard thing to do because of the multitudes of things that happen with the season. The intense freezing weather, shorter days with less sunlight can make it so that you don’t feel 100% taken from your mental and physical state. Due to these circumstances, staying positive becomes a lot more difficult. With the upcoming spring, people are also starting to feel anxious about how their spring seasons / sports could possibly go. However, finding ways to maintain happiness during the final stretch of winter is exactly what is needed to stay strong and finish off strong.
Staying happy in the wintertime can be a difficult task due to the challenge of the freezing temperature. The first step to becoming comfortable with the cold is learning to relax. Being tense in the freezing temperatures with insane wind causes the body to believe it’s colder than you actually are. I asked an athlete from our school, Tiana Pekar ’25, and this is what she said about this matter. “I train outside all the time, so it comes as second nature, so I could run in 20 degree weather in shorts. I do it because I want to stay in shape and keep my time from dropping.”
Staying active is very important, especially during this hard season, so something that you can do is stay moving. Moving is not only a great way to stay warm, but if you are a student athlete, it’s even more convenient. I asked another athlete from the Track team, Chris Maruyama ’25, and he shared, “I go to the gym. I train on the indoor track throughout winter, so I go to an indoor facility to run in circles because I feel like I don’t have the talent to do my sport, so I have to work two times harder.”
Planning for the spring is the final thing that I can recommend in order to get people ready for the next season. Planning will keep you on your toes and excited, which is a great thing to have time pass quickly. Whenever you are having fun, time flies by, so it helps immensely. I asked a student about what they plan for the spring and this is what they said about it: “I might do track because I want to spend time with my upperclassmen before they graduate.”
So hang in there, make it through the last part of winter, and enjoy your upcoming spring season!
