The Captain’s Farewell

Derek Sanderson Jeter, better known as the Yankees starting shortstop since 1995 and captain since 2003, played his last game Sunday September 28th. Jeter has played twenty seasons in major league baseball for the New York Yankees and is a five time World Series champion. Jeter’s major accomplishments have led to him to become a major icon and legend in major league baseball. Some of his accomplishments include, he  is the Yankees’ all-time career leader in hits (3,465), doubles (544), games played (2,747), stolen bases (358), times on base (4,716), plate appearances (12,602) and at bats (11,195) etc. Jeter has contributed tremendously to the franchise success of the Yankees resulting in him earning the nicknames of “Captain Clutch” and “Mr. November”. Many tears were shed by Jeter’s family and loyal fans during the Yankee stadium goodbye on Thursday. This was Jeter’s final time playing at his home field, leading to a very emotional and important moment in major league baseball history. Jeter, retiring at age 40, played his last game in Fenway Park which resulted in a 9-5 win over the Red-Sox.  Jeter was removed by Manager Joe Girardi during the third inning after he hit an RBI infield single off Boston starter Clay Buchholz. Giradi watched Jeter from the dugout, waiting for him to signal that it was time.  Catcher Brian McCann was sent to first base by Girardi to pinch run for Jeter.  Jeter ended his final moments as a Yankee by hugging his teammates and waving goodbye to 36,879 fans.
