With new players joining the wrestling team this year, they have good reason to look forward to a more successful season than the last few. Junior Omar Elmeshad expressed, “We definitely need to make some improvements as a team, but there is going to be so many new members I don’t think it will be a problem.” Both Elmeshad and Austin Serrano, a junior, agree being on the wrestling team means working hard to be the best. “There’s always some sort of rivalry to be the best of your weight division,” Serrano stated.
There are 12 different weight divisions. Serrano reports that there will probably be around 30 people on the team this year. With 30 people spread out in 12 divisions there should be no sweat to have a win. Elmeshad believes there may be luck for the team; he is also excited to be a part of the team this year. “This is my first year actually wrestling,” Elmeshad revealed. He then described how he could not participate in earlier years in high school due to detentions and loss of credit. “The day right before the first meet, Mr. Bertolini comes to me and says I can’t wrestle!” Though he wishes to have been part of the team earlier, he believes he’ll make a great addition to the team this year.
On the other hand, Serrano has been on the team since his freshman year. “Other sports just didn’t do it for me.” He explained. “Wrestling involves a lot of techniques. They can really come in handy if I ever get in a sticky situation one day.” Both Serrano and El Meshad hope to bring honor to their team. “With new teammates, there have to be new improvements,” Serrano reassured. While El Meshad emphasized, “Since the season hasn’t started yet, it’s hard to tell who will bring the most game, but I hope Leonia does well this year.” While they wish for the best, Leonia students and family members will undoubtedly be cheering them on.
